Of Bats and Bandros

The Comoros Islands lie at the northern end of the Mozambique Channel, which separates Madagascar from mainland Africa. Read about the efforts to protect the last remaining patches of forest on two of the islands in the archipelago, Anjouan and Moheli, which are home to the giant Livingstone's fruit bat, one of the largest bats in the world.

As part of the efforts to save the bats, Neil teamed up with other conservationists in the region, including visiting Madagascar, to see how habitat conservation efforts worked there, and if the lessons learned there could be transposed to the more remote Comoros Islands.  Read about what was done to set up a conservation project to protect the last of the bat roosts, and the challenges encountered when you are dealing with a species that is remote and lives in forests that are shrinking rapidly, as people living in poverty try to survive each day.
